The goal of this research is to design both hardwares and control algorithms of feasible actuation systems for camless engine valvetrain. Camless operation requires fast valve opening and closing with soft landing to its seat. Energy consumption and packability also need to be considered. Research efforts have been put on hydraulic actuation and electromagnetic actuation systems. Currently we are working on pizzo-electromagnetic actuation with hydraulic amplification.
