This is a hybrid concept other than electric hybrid for vehicle fuel economy. Enabled by camless valvetrain, the engine is configured to run as a compressor during vehicle braking, thus vehicle kinetic energy is used to produce compressed air. This energy is recovered during vehicle launch and acceleration at a later time. Main concerns are the optimization of the engine valve events to maximize air collection for a given braking torque during engine compression braking and minimize air using during vehicle launch and acceleration for a given acceleration torque.
